Join Us for a Big Night: Help Amphibians Safely Cross the Road

March 24, 2025

Each spring, amphibians migrate to their breeding pools, often crossing roads along the way. On Maine’s Big Nights, when temperatures are above 40°F with light rain, we head out to help frogs and salamanders safely reach their destinations. Volunteers are invited to join us for one of these special nights, where we’ll patrol the road,  assisting amphibians as they make their journey.
On the date(s) TBD, we’ll meet at the Fuller Forest Preserve parking lot at 9:00 PM and patrol for about an hour. YLT will provide high-visibility vests, but please bring a headlamp or flashlight- preferably one with a red-light option. Kids who are old enough to understand traffic safety are welcome to participate with an adult.
Big Nights can happen multiple times throughout the season, depending on weather conditions. To take part, sign up for email updates, and we’ll notify you 24 hours in advance when we’re heading out. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to witness an incredible natural event and make a real difference for Maine’s wildlife!
