Celebrating Three Outstanding Volunteers

We had the privilege to honor three outstanding volunteers at our Annual Members’ Gathering this year, each of whom will be stepping off the York Land Trust Board of Directors having finished their terms. We’d like to take this opportunity to share with you a bit about what each of these women brought to our organization during their time on the Board.

Susan Heckaman has served on the Board since 2010, and was actively involved in numerous fundraising events during that time. Her warmth and generosity always buoyed her work with us and made her a friendly and informative ambassador for YLT at numerous public outreach events. “Susan reminds us of the importance of social connections and gatherings,” says Board Chair Cliff O’Connor.  “She is a people person who values and encourages us to connect with our current or future members.” She is also someone who is not afraid to ask difficult questions, and her perspectives have enhanced all of our Board discussions.

Annette McKenney has served on the Board since 2013, and has been central to our stewardship efforts during that time. She is a kind, capable, and giving person who is always willing to share her love of the outdoors with others. “Her enthusiasm and energy are contagious,” says Board Member Debby Ethridge. Along with her husband Jon, Annette is an ambassador for our Hilton-Winn Preserve where they maintain trails, monitor boundaries, and contribute to a wondrous nature experience for visitors.

Karen Arsenault has completed her second nine year stint on the Board — a commitment matched only by Helen Winebaum (though there are other close contenders). She has held just about every position possible on the Board, has been involved in numerous major decisions, and has given years of her time and expertise as well as generous financial support. She has also inspired many community members to become involved as supporters, volunteers, ambassadors and leaders. “Her tireless efforts and strong defense of conservation make our community a better place for everyone,” says Board Member Bernie Speers.

We’re very grateful for all that Susan, Annette and Karen have brought to our organization, and we extend our sincere thanks for their hard work and commitment over the years.
