Volunteers Needs for the Annual Smelt Spawning Survey!
As the first of the sea-run fishes to return to freshwater each year, Rainbow smelt are a sure sign of spring along the Maine coast. We are excited to welcome back adventurous Community Scientists to help us track where, when, and how many smelt are spawning, from Kittery to Calais. Are you ready to pull on your muck boots and head into the chilly air to join the quest to spot smelt?
How to join the Spawning Smelt Survey:
Wells Reserve will hold the first of two virtual trainings next week, March 4, 2024. This training will be for volunteers conducting surveys in Southern and Midcoast Maine, as well as in the Penobscot region. A second training (for points Downeast of the Penobscot Estuary) will be held on April 1.
Training is required for participation even if you helped with the survey in previous years. During this training, we will provide you with all of the information you need to get started with the survey. A recording will be provided if you cannot attend the required training in person.
